Italian Style Goulash
This is an Italian Style Goulash made with fresh plum tomatoes, beans, pasta, and peppers.
The Traditional American Goulash has many other spices including paprika in it, no beans and a classic dish using elbow macaroni.
Our Italian Style Goulash is seasoned with fennel and fresh herbs with lean ground beef.
It's a hearty stew-like soup perfect for a chilly evening.
It's almost like a pasta fazool except it has peppers and beans in it. The Cabernet wine gives this sauce it's the character.
You really can use any kind of pasta you like but mom and grandma used either ditalini or small shells sometimes.

When I was growing up, everything mom and grandma made had an Italian flair to it.
They would spin off any American dish and turn it into an Italian dish.
Of course, there are no beans in the American style goulash and you can actually consider this as a chili instead with pasta.
When I grew up in Utica, also called Little Italy, this was a staple dish in our neighborhood in the winter months.
What makes this an Italian goulash?
It still has some beef hamburger, pasta ( not elbows but the ditalini style pasta) and the peppers with chunks of tomatoes makes it Italian style.
The red peppers give this stew, soup-like dish it's perfect characteristics of the well know goulash.
If you don't like beans, leave them out, we love them and always used them and you can use any kind of beans you like.
Mom occasionally even changed out the pasta for white boiled rice.
The sauce is fabulous, rich in flavor and addicting.
Time was tough you hear it all the time way back in mom and dad's day.
Money was pay check to pay check and fed 3 kids plus grandma lived with us.
Not to mention half the block would come over to eat.
Mom fed everyone, she always found a way to stretch the budget and make economical meals like this one that filled our bellies.
Here we are years later, this is still a family favorite, I made for my kids and now they make it for their kids.

Italian Style Goulash
prep time: 15 minscook time: 45 minstotal time: 60 mins
This is a hearty pasta dish with meat, peppers and garlic simmered in a Cabernet sauce.
ingredients:
2 cans cannellini beans rinsed and drained
1 1/2 cups cooked ditalini drained
2 pounds of ground round hamburger meat
5 long sweet red peppers cleaned and sliced
1 teaspoon fennel seeds
1 teaspoon fennel seeds
4 cloves of fresh garlic finely minced
3 tablespoon chopped fresh celery leaves
2 pounds of fresh plum tomatoes put through food processor leaving medium-sized chunks or use canned whole plum tomatoes chopped
1 1/2 cups cooked ditalini drained
olive oil
salt, pepper, cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon granulated garlic
2 fresh basil leaves chopped
1 sprig of fresh parsley chopped
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Garnish:
grated cheese to sprinkle on top
red pepper flakes

instructions:
In a large deep fry pan, add around 3 tablespoons of olive oil and saute meat for around 3 minutes with the fennel seed, drain some of the fat out. Add the garlic and peppers and saute for another 2 minutes. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, granulated garlic, pinch of cayenne pepper. Stir in the drained and rinsed beans
Add the tomatoes, wine, any leftover sauce around 1 cup or use canned, simmer for around 30 minutes stir in the herbs and celery leaves.
Cook the pasta in another pan to package instructions and drain.
Do not rinse.
Add to the cooked pasta.
Serve with crusty Italian bread. Garnish with grated Pecorino Romano Cheese and red pepper if preferred and fresh chopped parsley.
